| Plot |
| This is a fictionalized biography based on the early life of one of the greatest British writers, Jane Austen. Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) has grown up in the slightly dilapidated rectory at Stevenage with her parents (Julie Walters and Joe Anderson) and her beloved sister Cassandra (Anna Maxwell Martin). She is not content to behave as society says she should, using her keen wit to observe the lives and foibles of those around her and using them as inspiration for her writing. She has refused the attentions of various eligible men, an unusual choice for a woman of her status at this time. Then she meets Thomas Lefroy (James McAvoy), a promising lawyer. A romance quickly develops, but Lefroy must persuade his uncle and benefactor to accept Jane for their marriage to be possible. |
