In New Mexico in the late 19th century, Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) is a dangerous rancher who frightens everyone in the community of Appaloosa. He kills a lawman and deputies with no hesitation. Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) are hired to protect the people from Bragg. The people must give them total authority to do whatever is necessary. A widow named Allison French (Renee Zellweger) then comes to town, and Virgil likes her although he is not sure of her motives. She causes tension in regard to his partnership with Everett and complicates the already dangerous situation.
