Tex Wasabi
Southern BBQ & California-Style Sushi

515 4th Street
Santa Rosa, CA
707-544-TEXX (8399)

Atmosphere:
The atmosphere at Tex Wasabi is nice -- classy, yet casual. They have 2 bars and a dining area, with an upstairs area as well. We went early on a weeknight, so it wasn't crowded. However, the dining area is somewhat small, so it could easily be packed on the weekends. Also, the parking downtown can be a real pain. There is metered parking, and the lot is usually full around dinner time.

Food:
We started with an appetizer of Chipotle BBQ Pork Soft Tacos. The appetizer was small -- only two tacos -- but they were really good. The tacos consisted of corn tortillas filled with sweet & spicy pork, served with corn salsa, waka cabbage & chipotle sour cream dipping sauce. They were nice and spicy and the sauce was great.

For our main courses, Dave had the Ribs-n-Chicken Combination. The combo came with 1/2 rack house-smoked baby backs ribs & 1/4 BBQ chicken. The BBQ sauce on the ribs was a little sweet, and could be too much if you had more than the 1/2 rack of ribs. However, the ribs were nice and tender and good overall. The chicken was done in the same sauce, and was OK, but nothing special. For the price ($18), it was just average.

Heidi ordered the Hidden Chicken Crouching Salad. The salad consisted of Teriyaki-marinated & grilled chicken breast, on top of a mound of lettuces, red cabbage, shaved carrots, mandarin oranges, crispy won ton pieces and tossed in an Asian vinaigrette. The dressing was excellent and everything tasted very fresh. The chicken was great, but there could have been more of it. The salad was big enough to take 1/2 home and have it for lunch the next day. Of course, there was no chicken left, but the salad and dressing alone were still very tasty.

They also have a good wine & liquor list available.
